Mission Statement

The Campus Environmental, Health and Safety Committee is an advisory and coordinating committee. It is responsible for providing leadership in addressing environmental, health and safety issues in the University community by developing recommendations for the administration as to additions to or changes in policies and/or procedures that are needed to insure that the university provides a safe educational, work and recreational environment that complies with the necessary local, state and federal, environmental, health and safety regulations.


Committee Guidelines

  • In an advisory capacity, oversee the environmental, health and safety programs of the university.
  • Provide leadership on campus on environmental, health and safety issues.
  • Provide support and encouragement to the full time environmental, health and safety staff in carrying out their duties.
  • Challenge and help empower employees to assist in identifying and providing solutions to campus environmental, health and safety issues and concerns and provide timely support, assistance, resources and response.
  • Provide representation of various departments on the committee to insure that areas with significant environmental, health and safety concerns are represented.
  • Make recommendations to appropriate directors, department heads and senior officer as to additions to or changes in environmental, health and safety policies and/or procedures.
  • Appoint subcommittees or task forces to review new or changing local, state or federal laws, rules or regulations, summarize the implications, and make recommendations by way of the committee to appropriate administrators.
  • Foster awareness of environmental, health and safety issues on campus through education and training.
  • Encourage faculty and staff to practice safety as a routine part of their job. Encourage faculty to practice and teach safety as part of their normal programs so that students leave the university with a clear understanding of the need to practice safety as a routine part of their job in industry.
  • Monitor and modify as necessary the campus safety awards program.
  • Review and monitor the status of university environmental, health and safety programs on a periodic basis.
  • Review incidents that result in work-related injuries or fatalities, review complaints regarding safety or health hazards and hold regular meetings with written minutes.
